There’s no doubt Deepika Padukone looked flawless at her wedding. While several initially thought the bride had picked out outfits by Sabyasachi, it was later clarified that though the design house had styled Deepika, the red Kanjeevaram sari she wore at her Chitrapur Saraswat ceremony and the golden sari we saw her in at her reception in Bengaluru were designed by K Radharaman.

Designer Mr K Radharaman is part of a family who has been involved in the textile business for 600 years! Though he graduated with a degree in engineering from Cornell University, he decided to pursue a career closer to his family legacy. Eager to carve out a distinct identity for himself, Radharaman set up his first retail venture, Angadi Silks, in 2001 and then Angadi Galleria in Bengaluru in 2014.

The Quint met up with the designer who told us all about Deepika’s saris that were conceptualised by him under the label Advaya for the House of Angadi.

The sari Deepika wore for her wedding is a real zari Kanjeevaram brocade. The body design is the Gandaberunda, a mythological two-headed bird which is part of the emblem of Karnataka. It represents prosperity and wisdom, i.e., material wealth and spiritual wealth. It is very symbolic for the bride to have chosen this sari.

“The sari worn for the reception is an Advaya tissue brocade sari and is a pure zari Kanjeevaram. The body is embellished with a beautiful all over ‘jaal' and the pallav is closely woven. Both designs are part of the Advaya Heritage Series and are limited-edition pieces,” adds the designer.
