The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is now offering transgenders in Kerala jobs in crowd management and customer relation sections. After the government unveiled its transgender policy, new opportunities are being provided to end the social stigma against the third gender.
It makes me happy that transgenders are being accepted in our society. We have 20,000 transgenders in Kerala. Most of them are jobless or engaged in menial jobs.Sree, Secretary, Oasis Cultural Society
The jobs are provided to transgenders under Kudumbasree, a poverty eradication project. The Kochi police have registered around 120 transgenders so far. However, there are many more transgenders who haven’t registered themselves due to the fear of social stigma.
