There are many budding ice skaters in India, but they are left to fend for themselves.

The Ice Skating Association of India reimburses only 50 percent of the amount spent by an ice skater to participate in international competitions.

The 14-time ice skating Nationals Champion Anup Kumar Yama funds himself through a gem stones business.

Once Yama and his partner Aldrin Elizabeth Mathew were given the funds by Telangana government to participate in the Asian Winter Games, but they were not given funds for any of the competitions leading up to the Games.

There are hardly any ice skating rinks in India. Aldrin has to travel to Delhi from Hyderabad or go abroad to practice ice skating.

The 14th National Ice Skating Championship was held at iSKATE, Gurugram on 1-2 October.
