An SIT court has pronounced the quantum of punishment for 24 convicts in the 2002 Gulbarg Society Massacre case. This sentencing had been deferred twice in the past.
Eleven of the 24 have been sentenced to life imprisonment, while 12 have been given seven years of jail time. One has been sent to jail for 10 years.
The victims’ families and activists are not happy with the sentence and feel that the court has been too lenient. They were expecting the death sentence.
Of the 66 accused of the massacre, 24 were convicted, 36 others were acquitted and 6 died before the verdict was pronounced. Of the convicts, 11 were charged with murder and the remaining 13 were convicted of other charges.
The massacre was responsible for the deaths of 69 people, including former Congressman and parliamentarian Ehsan Jafri.
