Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to the people of Gujarat to maintain peace after several cities across the state witnessed a night of violence on the streets.

21-year-old Hardik Patel, who is leading the state-wide protest in Gujarat demanding reservation for Patels, called for a bandh on Wednesday morning.

This came after several incidents of arson and violence across multiple cities in Gujarat on Tuesday night. Section 144 was imposed in several areas of Ahmedabad, Surat and Rajkot.

Most schools, colleges and shops remained closed in these places.
