About two months after taking office, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched a free power connection scheme for BPL families along with waiving farmer loans. Whether or not the loan waiver has actually benefited the poor is still being debated, with some farmers claiming that only a few paise were waived from their existing loans.

But in an interview with The Quint’s Sanjay Pugalia, Adityanath said that farmers need to be brought to the fore and the government needs to ensure that farmers get paid more than the amount they spend in cultivation.

He also said that despite UP being home to 2.45 crores farmers, “none of the farmers in UP are protesting.”

Other than farmers, the youth of UP are also one of the prime focuses in the state, Yogi said, adding that more than 4 lakh new jobs will be provided to them.
