Onetime Republican presidential rival, Texas Senator Ted Cruz congratulated Donald Trump for winning the party’s nomination while addressing the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Cruz is a Conservative favourite who came in second in the delegate race behind Trump.
Cruz linked arms with Republicans at the party’s national convention on Wednesday, but stopped well short of endorsing the nominee who beat him and held wide open the possibility of a second presidential campaign.
Cruz – a bitter Trump rival from the primaries – used his speech earlier Wednesday night at the party’s convention to suggest that people vote their “conscience for anyone who will uphold the Constitution.”
Newt Gingrich stepped in to defend Ted Cruz’s decision not to endorse Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Gingrich – a former House speaker who’s a Trump supporter – says Cruz’s advice actually amounts to an endorsement. Gingrich says there’s only one candidate on the ballot in November who’ll uphold the Constitution –and that’s Trump.
