As the year comes to an end, it’s time to look back at some of the films that really impressed and influenced us in 2018. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk was a rare commercial and critical success that triggered off a lot of debate on the subject of Islamophobia and communalism in today’s India.

I sat down with Sinha and had a chat with him about his favourite films of the year. Here’s the filmmaker’s own favourites:

Andhadhun

“I didn't watch many this year, but one that immediately comes to mind for its wicked writing and fantastic script and performances was Andhadhun. It was beautiful, it was as mad as it gets. Andhadhun is the most wicked Bollywood hit. It makes you laugh where you are not supposed to laugh at all and it keeps surprising you. So there is this twisted writer's mind which is sort of meddling with your assumptions and guesses and he's meddling with it. I love Andhadhun for that, I thought Ayushmann was very good in it.”

Manmarziyaan

Manmarziyaan, again was a director who was pushing the boundary. There was this love triangle of a woman caught between two men, one she loves and one she ends up marrying and Anurag pushes the boundaries of morality beyond socially acceptable limits and still makes sure that you don't hate the girl, which I thought was a very big achievement. So I really liked Manmarziyaan.”

Stree

“I have been for years, telling people and wanting to make a horror comedy because I am so scared of horror films. So I thought maybe a horror comedy is something that I can deal with besides the point that half the film I was watching with closed eyes. But it was funny it was wicked and it was new. I loved it for its newness. So these three films I really liked this year.”
