“I am sorry. It is too overwhelming to talk. Please excuse me.”

It has been almost 7 days that Mujeeb has not heard of, or from his brother. Mujeeb’s mother and sister are at their wit’s end. Their voices muffled.

Najeeb Ahmed, an MSc first year student, went missing from his hostel room in the Jawaharlal University campus on Saturday, following an alleged altercation with a bunch of ABVP members. The central university campus hasn’t been quiet since.

Amidst student protests, a gherao, and then division of opinion on campus, Najeeb’s family finds itself waiting for an absolution. They want their boy back. Mujeeb didn’t wish to speak, “Mere man main kya chal rahai hai...” He didn’t finish the sentence. Aqdas Musharraf, Najeeb's cousin, spoke at length with us.

When he comes back, we will take him away from JNU. We won’t let him continue his studies here. We have no faith left in the administration.

Najeeb’s family asks for more cooperation from the police and the administration in tracing him. They think the student agitation might take the word the higher echelons of the judiciary and establishment.

We hope they hear their plea. We hope Najeeb returns, or is found soon. Sound and alive.
