The Quint spoke to residents of the Jamiyat colony in Khampur village, many of whom narrated their experiences of the riots in 2013. Akhtari Begum recollects how an angry mob ransacked her house on the fateful night of September 7, 2013.

But what’s more shocking is the government’s apathy towards those displaced by the riots. Local Panchayat member Shaidulzama, says that in the last three years, her family has not received any help from the government.

2013 has often been read as the darkest in Uttar Pradesh’s social-political history. Over 55,000 people were displaced in the riots are yet to find a place they can call home.
