Jeep is here in India, and we can’t be more excited to try it on the rough and tough roads in the country. Both Cherokee and Wrangler SRT were first showcased at the Auto Expo 2016 this year, and much like every other auto company, Jeep has managed to make its uber-SUVs available in the country this year itself.

But with prices starting from Rs 71.59 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi), it is hard to see the legendary Jeep becoming a brand worth reckoning in the country. How so?

If we pit the Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD with the Land Rover Discovery Sport (which starts from Rs 46 lakhs), the price difference is quite staggering and it that hasn’t escaped the notice of the public here.

What the Price!

We checked the pricing of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in the United States, and it is safe to say that Jeep has taken Apple’s cue with the pricing for India. However, a fair assessment indicates that Jeep might have gone one step above Apple with its range of four wheelers.

The price difference between US and Indian models, even after adding up various taxes and customs, is a huge 250 percent. So, as this tweet points out, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited priced at Rs 18 lakhs in the US will cost you almost four times that in India. Clearly Fiat hasn’t learn from its mistakes, which could end up hurting Jeep real bad.

There are many people who just can’t believe what Jeep has done, and would happily prefer the Land Rover instead.

Not surprising that #JeepSoPricey is already making the Twitter rounds. These things have definitely come to Land Rover’s notice, but this cheeky banner is more in reference to incidents that we call Gurujam.

Jeep is an iconic brand which for some reasons never made it to India. But frankly speaking, at these prices we really hope Jeep can find some takers, or else the brand will be forgotten even before it sets up shop here in the country.
