WhatsApp currently allows users to sign in to the desktop by scanning the QR code on the mobile. And pretty soon, you’ll be able to use the same QR code to add new contacts or share your profile as well.

The feature is yet to roll out for all the users but as spotted by the guys at WABetainfo, the option is visible to users of beta version of the messaging app. QR codes are seen as a safer way of sharing content details, without revealing everything, except for the person who receives it.

The option will be available in the settings menu of the app for the users.

As you can see here, the report from WABetaInfo teases the QR Code feature, which could make its way to regular WhatsApp users in the coming weeks. Sharing of contact is already available in the feature box of the app, but with QR code, it’s likely to become easier than before.

In market like India, where WhatsApp is already offering its Payment option, QR codes can become a useful tool for safe and reliable transactions to go through.

For the safety of users, they can also revoke the QR code which then stops it from letting other future users scan the code to get contact information.

This has worked exceedingly well for platforms like Paytm in the country, which is one of the leading players in the mobile payments space.

The messaging platform, with its focus on payment in India has been ordered to store user data (including name, address, mobile and account number) within the country, which will further encourage use of QR codes to do multiple things within the app.
