The latest update on getting dark mode for WhatsApp still doesn’t give us a release date and we’re not sure why.

We’ve written umpteen reports of WhatsApp getting dark mode but the Facebook-owned platform is yet to oblige its users with the feature. Most likely, the company hasn’t found the right balance for theme to work on new and older Android versions, delaying its roll out in the process.

But now, we’ve got new update on the development, and it seems WhatsApp has changed the way dark mode will work on phones with Android 9 or lower.

This has been spotted by WABetaInfo, which has shared new updates available through the beta version 2.19.353 this week. Unlike the previous method, the report says that dark mode might be offered in the battery saving settings in the near future, whenever it releases.

“According to our recent discoveries, WhatsApp can automatically enable/disable the Dark Theme based on your Battery Saver settings (removing the old System default option, for unsupported Android versions),” the report from WABetaInfo points out.

While dark mode comes to Android 10 by default, other versions of Android will have to be tuned to support the upcoming feature, and it seems WhatsApp is making sure all users get the same experience.

Making the feature work on previous versions is crucial for WhatsApp, as most devices are still running on outdated Android flavour, which is unlikely to be fixed in the near future. But it’s worth pointing out that even after all this, we still don’t have a release date for the feature. The wait, as they say, goes on.
