This is big news for all you Twitteratti’s out there.

After Twitter opened up its direct messages service for all earlier this year, they have now decided to do away with the 140 character limit on such messages.

Twitter has decided to increase the word limit for direct messages (DMs) to 10,000 characters starting July, 2015, but no official date has been decided yet.

The move does not include Twitter’s design choice of constraining tweets to 140 characters.

Direct Messages in other social networks, like Facebook and LinkedIn, do not have length limits, but Twitter had been following this rule since its inception.

However, this can be a big advertising move by Twitter, because if you have checked in for “Receive Direct Messages from anyone” on your Twitter account settings, be ready for some spam in your inbox.

If you do start getting spam, you always have the option of changing your security and privacy settings an bar non-followers to message you.
