A LOT of phones were released in 2015. Along with them, came a lot of software and hardware updates, and of course, the accompanying gimmicks. Apple tried to become more like Android, and Android continued to gravitate towards Apple.

What really happened in the mobile industry though?

Android Cameras Caught up with the iPhone

For years, iPhone users had been bragging about how their phone cameras are always the best. Apple had put in a ton of money for R&D on their cameras, and in comparison, Android phones rendered really awful photographs. That’s completely changed now. Samsung, LG and even Huawei have pulled their socks up. The Samsung S6 variants and LG G4 and V10 can all deliver photos as good, and sometimes even better photos than the iPhone 6s. The LG phones in particular, with their manual controls, have showed that paying less money for Android doesn’t necessarily mean crappy photos. Hurrah!

Smartwatches Still Suck

Motorola released the second generation 360, Apple released their own watch, and Samsung continued to render more ridiculous things that resemble an Apple Watch. The common thread between all the products is that they all suck. No company could come up with a legitimate reason why a user should buy a Smartwatch. Their battery life is awful, the display screen is unintuitive, and bigger-sized watches look silly on a normal human wrist, and they all cost a bomb. After even one company fixes at least one of these issues, people would probably venture out to buy a smartwatch. Until then, wearables are a tech failure much like 3D TVs.

Apple Still Doesn’t Give a Shit!

Like Salman Khan who can get the box office ringing with pretty much anything that he does, Apple can get customers shell out their life savings with anything that they do. Which is why Apple’s products have the least innovation with every cycle in comparison to other companies. The iPhone 6s is a devolution in comparison to the previous model with smaller batteries, no improvement in camera and higher prices. They don’t care if it’s 2015 – the base models still start at 16GB. People’s phone directories weigh 10GB nowadays, and iOS itself weighs almost half of that. But nope, Apple couldn’t care less.

OS Updates Still Murder the Phones

A software update on the phone is supposed to: a) make the phone a more pleasurable device, b) make your work easier, c) offer more features that help you live your life more comfortably. On both Android and iOS, the updates a) make the phones laggy, b) decreases battery life, c) makes you hate the phone so that you buy a new one. Genius.

Moto X Play is the Best Phone of the Year

In a world where Samsung and Apple make overpriced phones, and Lenovo, Asus, Xiaomi and OnePlus vie for the mid-range market with phones that cost less than half of the high-end market, Motorola delivered a beast of both worlds. The Moto X Play, with a gigantic battery, super smooth OS, good enough screen and specs to power the everyman, and its insanely low price easily wins the crown for the phone of the year. It’s not the prettiest phone in the world, but in terms of bang for buck, it blows everything else out the water.
