Samsung seems to have rectified all the issues with the Galaxy Fold, its first phone with a foldable screen and is now ready to launch it in some countries.
This confirmation has come from DJ Koh, CEO, Samsung Electronics on Thursday, which is likely that people who’ve pre-ordered for the phone won’t have to wait long. Koh was quoted in a report by the Korea Herald this week.
“We will not be too late,” Koh was quoted saying in the report when quizzed about the rescheduled US launch of the foldable flagship, which was previously expected to be pushed beyond its 30 May timeline.
Many reviewers complained of issues with the Galaxy Fold, forcing Samsung to investigate the issue and find a solution for it before the product enters the market.
Having said that, Koh didn’t reveal the launch date in the interview, but we’re likely to hear more about it from Samsung in the coming days.
Galaxy Fold was unveiled at a global in the US few months back, much before any other brand managed to showcase theirs. But the hurried approach from Samsung came at the cost of issues with the device, as most people who got the unit complained of problem with the hinge design, especially when you fold the device.
When asked to elaborate on the issues being fixed with the device, Koh stated his team is increasing the durability of the Galaxy Fold with few tweaks. Firstly, it will strengthen the exposed areas of the hinge and make sure there’s no gap between the protective layer, which the reviewers mistakenly peeled off thinking it was just the screen protector.
The Galaxy Fold is a unique device, claiming to chart the future of smartphone innovation for the industry. It gets a smaller 4.3-inch screen on the outside, and there a bigger tablet-size screen once you open it up. It has been priced at a whopping Rs 1.45 lakh (INR converted) and is expected to hit Indian shores as well.
Big Brother is Keeping an Eye
The Galaxy Fold, at least for now, has to compete with only the Huawei Mate X, but others are expected to join the foldable ranks in the coming years. Google has confirmed that it is keeping an eye on the foldable space and reports suggest it could be working on some prototypes that are nowhere close to the end product.
It spoke to multiple media outlets on the sidelines of the Google I/O 2019 this week, and with Android Q also getting native support for devices with foldable screen, don’t be surprised to see more developments from Google later this year.
Apple could be the other major brand which could throw up a surprise or two later this year, when the new iPhones are introduced to the world.
