Review: LG PH1 Lights up Your Room Along With Quality Music

Being able to buy a quality Bluetooth speaker without having to spend a fortune is rare. Although less expensive speakers have entered the market, they are nowhere close to matching the quality of their expensive peers.

LG would probably be the last brand you would consider while buying speakers at the sub-5K price point but with the PH1 they have made us rethink.

• LED indicator for battery not user-friendly

What’s Good?

Don’t go by its size. The LG PH1 speaker has enough power to keep a room reverberating with loud music. The cylindrical-shaped PH1 has got an elegant design that will surely look good on your table, be it day or night.

The biggest USP of the PH1 has to be the built-in LED lights that illuminate along with the tracks being played. It switches between a wide array of colours and makes its presence felt within the transparent plastic shelling of the speaker, as seen below.

You’ll get clear vocals and not much distortion at higher volumes.

You get variety of options to connect the speaker with your phone or PC. There’s Bluetooth and 3.5-mm audio jack for the wired millennials. The speaker gets charged via microUSB port which ensures that you don’t need to carry an additional charger while travelling.

What’s Bad?

We would have loved to see LG using two sound drivers on the PH1. This way, the acoustic experience would have been spread out to a wider range than what it is right now, owing to the driver’s position on the top.

While the music is loud and clear, but it clearly lacks in the treble and bass department. When you consider the quality of a Xiaomi Mi Bluetooth speaker for under Rs 3,000, the PH1 is definitely lagging here.

The inclusion of the LED lights is a battery drainer. It has got a 3.7V sized battery that charges quickly, but drains out in a jiffy as well. For a Bluetooth speaker, battery life is critical, and sadly with LG PH1 it is low for its standard and price point.

Why Buy It?

We’re finding it hard to recommend the LG PH1, but as always, there are buyers for everything these days.

For its size, the PH1 is loud but lacks when it comes to offering bass for the music. For Rs 4,490 there are plenty of options worth buying, and the PH1 stands alongside them just as another option.
