Reliance Jio has done its bit in the mobile sector and is now eyeing the fixed-line broadband space with Jio GigaFiber. The service has been mooted to debut for quite sometime now and as claimed by Mukesh Ambani, will be available in over 1,100 cities simultaneously.

It’s still early to comment on how much the service will cost but this week’s Reliance AGM did give us an indication as to what the internet service will offer. In addition to that, Reliance Jio also revealed that the Jio GigaFiber users will get bundled service from Jio’s set top box that will support voice command-enabled remote.

The internet service will be made available from 15 August and here’s everything you need to know about the latest Reliance Jio offering.

What is Jio GigaFiber?

Jio has been pilot-testing its wired broadband service in different pockets of country. This service from Jio works on the optical fibre technology, which promises high-speed internet up to 1Gbps.

Jio will provide users with internet router, and set-top box which will be connected to its network. This will in turn focus on transforming your house into a smart home.

Starting this Independence Day, 15 August,  you can start registering your interest for JioGigaFiber through both  MyJio and Jio.com. We will prioritise our JioGigaFiber rollout to those localities from where we receive the highest number of registrations.

It is likely that Jio GigaFiber will cost nothing and Jio will want consumers to spend on acquiring its router for a refundable fee.

The operator has already been testing its broadband service and now it believes they are ready to hit the big time.

While broadband internet services have been affordable in the country for a while, Jio’s entry into the space could result in a mass-market push. Providers like Tata Sky and Airtel, the leader in broadband segment still hasn’t been generous enough with its data offerings but with Jio making its foray into the market, things could change very soon.

High-speed internet from Jio means one big change in the dynamics of your house – smart solutions. The company, led by Akash and Isha Ambani, has claimed that Jio is building its solutions that can be remotely operated via MyJio app from a smartphone.

Be it checking temperature of air conditioner or to monitor any gas leaks, Jio GigaFiber promises to solve all that.

Reliance Jio will provide solution to set up the internet router and connected products, which will be undertaken in one hour.

They’ll also offer a slew of smart home products ranging from smart speaker (voice enabled) to video cameras for security purposes.

It’s still not clear as to how Jio plans on offering these smart home products, with most of them currently selling in the country are imported from China.

Jio GigaFiber – India’s Gateway to Ultra-HD

The other exciting part about Jio GigaFiber and its claimed speed is the access to high-quality content. Brands like Xiaomi and Vu already sell 4K-enabled TVs in the country and Jio could help them expand their potential consumer base.

It’ll be interesting to see how Jio manages to price its broadband data plans and will it be a case of deja vu for operators in the fixed line space.
