Many users who’ve got access to beta version of Oreo-based Oxygen OS have shared screenshots of the Face Unlock feature showing up on the settings page. If that turns out to be the case then OnePlus opting to insert the feature via software could be a masterstroke.

Both OnePlus 5T and 5 run on the same hardware, which could help the Face Unlock feature work without any glitches.

The feature, as admitted by OnePlus themselves, isn’t as secure as the fingerprint scanner at the back, which is why you can’t rely on it to pay for online shopping. something which can be done with Face ID on the iPhone X.

During our time with the OnePlus 5T, we’ve found the Face Unlock feature to be responsive in most conditions, but at least, OnePlus has been sensible enough to not make it the only option (unlike Apple).

Having said that, the software nature of Face Unlock did leave us confused, especially when the light conditions didn’t match up to the requirements of the unlocking feature.

Beta versions are tested with features that may or may not hit the official build, but don’t be surprised if OnePlus 5 does end up getting Face Unlock with Oreo update. After all, we’d all like that, wouldn’t we?
