OnePlus 3 and 3T users will get updated to Android O in 2017, but that’ll be the end of the software support for both devices.

OnePlus has officially said that users of OnePlus 3 and 3T will have to contend with minor security updates from 2018, putting their focus on devices starting from OnePlus 5 in 2018.

We all know that Android O will make its way to Android smartphone users later in 2017, including the OnePlus 3, 3T and 5 users, but with this news, sadly, OnePlus seems to be implying that those users should look to upgrade to 5 or any other device.

Clearly, the good news that OnePlus shared with its existing 3 and 3T consumer base was short-lived. The news was openly shared by Oliver, Head of Product, OnePlus team via the OnePlus forum.

Answering multiple questions, including “How long will the OP3/3T continue to receive software support?’’have been posed to Oliver by forum users.

Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates.

He further added that once the OnePlus 3 and 3T are updated to Android O, OnePlus will carry forward its Open Beta program from OnePlus 3 to OnePlus 5 from 2018. In many ways, this could mark the end of OnePlus 3, and even the more recent OnePlus 3T.

It’s hard to understand the reason behind cutting off support for both these devices, without stating why the OnePlus and OnePlus 2 haven’t even been mentioned here.

OnePlus has gained wide consumer base in its four year journey, but this news will not go down well with its users. If this pattern tends to continue, then chances are that people might never consider any of the OnePlus phones with its sketchy software timelines.
