A report stating that WhatsApp will send notifications of screenshots being taken of their chats to users from 5 February was widely shared on Facebook and WhatsApp groups, creating a flutter among those who use the social media platform.

Quoting the CEO of WhatsApp Jan Koum, a dubious website called 8shit.net wrote:

The functioning is simple, just like the blue tick: You will have the option activated by default. If it’s checked, you’ll be notified if someone screenshots your conversation, and others will be notified if you screenshot theirs. If it’s unchecked, no one gets notified.

But there is no doubt that it is a fake report since the website also carries stories titled “Supermarkets are taking off everything that may cause cancer” and “Florida man arrested for breaking into jail to hang out with friends”.

In November 2016, there was a similar report on Instagram notifying users when a screenshot is taken of their photos worried. This too was proved to be fake.
