Microsoft’s answer to challenge Google Chromebook comes in the form of Windows 10 S. This version of Windows has been designed for students, catering to schools across the globe, something that Google has excelled with its Chrome OS and Chromebook ecosystem.

Microsoft’s reliability is the reason why brands like Samsung, Acer, Asus and Dell, among others, have partnered to make devices that support Windows 10 S, priced at $189 (Rs 12,000 approx).

The Windows 10 S powered systems will be ready to be shipped later this summer, right in time for the new session, according to Microsoft.

Windows 10 S comes bundled with a free subscription to Minecraft edition, and a one-year free use of Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft is also enabling existing schools with Windows 10 Pro to switch to Windows 10 S for free.

The company says that even though Windows 10 S is a streamlined version of Windows 10, it will still support most apps available via Windows Store. Interestingly, Google is yet to commit to offering its Chrome browser for Windows 10 S, which gives Microsoft the chance to push consumers to use its Edge browser.

They haven’t revealed the apps that are available for Windows 10 S right now, which could make or break the case for Microsoft.

Let’s hope the Windows devices offer internal storage, something that’s missing on the cloud-centric Chrome OS from Google. Will these $189 laptops with Windows 10 S make its way to India? We’ll know soon.
