Microsoft has not only stopped supporting various versions of its Internet Explorer web browser, but also pulled out of updating and supporting the Windows 8 operating system (OS). One must keep in mind that Windows 8.1 continues to be part of Microsoft’s OS cycle (at least until Jan 2023 they say.)

Windows 8 succeeded the popular Windows 7, and was heavily overhauled to work as a converging ecosystem that worked seamlessly on phone, tablet and PC. The Live Tiles feature was introduced to make laptop and All-in-one PCs that came with the touch-friendly display.

In addition to that, there were issues which plagued the performance of the OS, thereby affecting the life of a PC. Windows 8 was also alleged to have been the reason for shift in demand for PCs in the market which enforced PC manufacturers to resort to offering Windows 7 version with their computing products. Users feel that Windows 8.1 OS got all the attributes that Windows 8 should’ve got in first place.

But if Windows 8.1 does not catch your fancy either, then you can freely upgrade to the Windows 10 version. This Windows OS has new features, a streamlined Web browser called Edge and a desktop version of Cortana, the online assistant that is Microsoft’s answer to Google Now and Apple’s Siri.

The company insists Windows 10 will seem familiar to users of Windows 7, the six-year-old operating system still running on most PCs and erase the memory of the last big update, Windows 8.
