Reliance Jio has topped the chart of fastest 4G telecom operators with an average peak download speed of 22.3 megabit per second (mbps) on its network while Idea Cellular registered the highest upload speed in May, according to a TRAI report, PTI said.
However, according to the TRAI website – last updated on 8 July – the average speed for Jio has come down to 18.6 mbps.
Jio's national average 4G download speed was more than double of its closest rival Bharti Airtel in May, which recorded a download speed of 9.7 mbps.
This came down to 9.2 mbps in July as per the MySpeed Portal of TRAI’s website.
Vodafone and Idea Cellular registered a slight dip in download speeds in May at 6.7 and 6.1 mbps respectively, compared to 7.3 mbps that was recorded as late as 8 July.
Idea, however, continued to top the chart in terms of 4G upload speed in May, but with a slight dip compared to April, PTI added.
Download speed plays an important role when a user watches a video, browses the internet, and accesses emails. A good upload speed is essential when a user wants to share data like images, videos, and any other file through email or social media applications.
Idea registered nationwide average peak upload speeds of 5.9 mpbs in May compared to 6.3 mbps in April. The upload speed, according to the latest data has gone up to 6.5 mbps. It was followed by Vodafone which registered peak upload speeds of 5.3 mbps and Jio at 4.5 mbps, as per a speedtest on 18 July.
Both Jio and Idea have continued to maintain a lead in their respective segments for the past several months.
The average internet speed is computed by TRAI based on data it collects with the help of its MySpeed application in real time.
Idea's upload speed has shown a declining trend since last March, PTI added.
