The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Thursday, 17 October, released the what it called was the “first illuminated image of the lunar surface acquired by the Chandrayaan-2 mission's IIRS payload.”

"IIRS (Imaging Infrared Spectrometer) is designed to measure reflected sunlight from the lunar surface in narrow and contiguous spectral channels," the space agency said in a tweet.

"The image covers part of the lunar far-side in the northern hemisphere. Few prominent craters are seen in the image (Sommerfield, Stebbins and Kirkwood)," ISRO said in a statement.

On 4 October, ISRO had released images of the Moon's surface captured by Chandrayaan-2's Orbiter High-Resolution Camera (OHRC).

The mission's Vikram lander made a hard-landing on the moon on 7 September, with the ground stations having lost communication with it.
