Apple iPhones launched in 2018 finally support dual-SIM connectivity, but we were yet to see it working on the iPhone XS, XS Max and the XR in the country.
Airtel and Reliance Jio talked about supporting the eSIM network for the devices, but most telecom companies were waiting for Apple to release the next update for iOS 12 to activate the feature.
The feature was finally unlocked last week, and Jio has been the first to provide the feature for users on its network. People have been quick to try it out on their new iPhones. For those of you still wondering how the eSIM feature on the new iPhones work, here’s how the process works.
One needs to visit a Reliance Jio store to get the eSIM activated. New as well as existing Jio users can opt for this version on the iPhone XS, XS Max and the XR.
You will be asked to fill a Customer Acquisition Form (CAF) with details that get fed into a point of sale (POS) machine where the SIM swap option will be available. This machine will generate a barcode and other SIM details.
Scan the barcode using cellular settings on the iPhone, which will create an eSIM profile on the user's device. Once the verification is done, the physical SIM is deactivated and the eSIM is ready for use.
Similar steps are to be followed by a new user on Jio. Fill the CAF, and choose a prepaid/postpaid plan. Get a barcode from the POS machine, which is scanned on the iPhone.
Post verification process, the eSIM profile of the user is created and the number gets activated on his/her iPhone. Now, you've got a dual-SIM iPhone running on two networks at the same time.
Many users have tweeted the use of dual-SIM on an iPhone, a feature which has been present on Android since Lollipop.
The eSIM version for Airtel is likely to start rolling out in the coming days. The steps to activate it would be similar to that of Reliance Jio.
