Intex Technologies announced its association with Jolla for incorporating the sailfish OS in their portfolio. The new phones will be branded as Intex Aqua Fish and the launch in India is expected in November 2015.
Intex is looking at this partnership as a befitting opportunity to establish itself as the first Indian smartphone player to bring in this operating system to India.
We are very excited to be the world’s first licensing partner for Sailfish OS and look forward to utilizing the great user experience of the next generation Sailfish OS 2.0 in our products. Together with the Sailfish India ecosystem partners we believe that we can provide an exciting new choice for smartphone lovers in India and later globally as well. With an open platform like Sailfish OS we have a magnificent opportunity to offer great locally relevant premium content to our customers, all integrated directly into the smartphone’s operating system.
–Mr. Sanjay Kalirona, Head Mobile Business, Intex Technologies
Jolla as a company also has a BRICS strategy in place and they support the Digital India movement, thus partnering with a brand like Intex is just a stepping stone.
In our BRICS country strategy we have been proceeding fastest in India, which is one the most important markets in the future of mobile. We have seen a lot of interest among Indian mobile device manufacturers, digital media houses, and operators, and they are all very keen to work with an alternative to the currently dominating mobile operating systems. India needs and deserves its own regional mobile ecosystem, an open platform, which supports local Indian services and businesses.
–Mr. Antti Saarnio, Executive Chairman of Jolla
The Finland base of the company Jolla had come to India with a device in 2014, but now are focusing on software front. Jolla also plans to partner with other Indian mobile phone manufacturers in India.
The reference design Jolla Sailfish OS 2.0 smartphone was showcased at MWC 2015, Shanghai and it seems to offer a different user experience than the already existing Android and iOS platforms.
Apart from the Jolla announcement, Intex also plans to come out with waterproof smartphones in the coming months. The company’s R&D center in China is already in talk with vendors for waterproofing solutions in their next smartphone.
