Google has ambitious plans of powering its multiple large-scale operations using only renewable energy by 2017. Google, which is currently the largest corporate buyer of solar energy in the world, will soon power all its 13 data centers and offices in 150 cities worldwide.

Google began this push six years ago when it signed long-term contracts to buy renewable energy directly from solar and wind farm suppliers. Its first move was to purchase electricity from a 114-megawatt (MW) wind farm in Iowa, United States.

However, by the end of 2015, it ramped up its usage of renewable power to 2 gigawatts, after it purchased another 842MW of renewable energy.

On Thursday, Google also released its first comprehensive environmental report, detailing its efforts to minimize its carbon footprint, and also includes information about other green initiatives that the company is taking.

However, Google is not the only tech giant working towards a more sustainable future using cleaner sources of energy.

Earlier, in September, Apple announced plans of running all of its data centers and corporate offices on renewable energy. In the same month, Microsoft announced plans to power its data centers around the world using 50% renewable energy by 2018.
