Consumers in Delhi can finally enjoy free internet on-the-go, as the state government has finally put a timeline to launching its Wi-Fi hotspot project in the capital region.
According to Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi, the state will start providing free WiFi to the people in next three to four months. He said people will also get 15GB data every month.
The Delhi chief minister said that the Cabinet on Thursday approved the free WiFi proposal under which 11,000 hotspots will be set up across the city in the first phase.
Seventy assembly constituencies will have 1,000 hotspots each while 4,000 hotspots will be set up at bus queue shelters.
This is the umpteen time when the state government under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made announcement regarding its Wi-Fi hotspot project. But with the state assembly elections around the corner, this move seems to Kejriwal’s attempt to please the people in the city, which could hopefully win his party the upcoming elections.
The AAP government had set March 2018 as the target for the launch of the first phase of its ambitious free Wi-Fi project in the national capital but clearly that didn’t work out.
As per the Outcome Budget shared few months back, the data limit per house was expected to be limited to 45GB per house, at a speed of 4 Mbps. But the latest promise from AAP doesn’t state the expected speed of the internet, and it remains to be seen if people are content with getting access to 15GB, that too over a period of one month.
Considering the density of people in the city, it will be a challenge to cater to a large number of users but hopefully the Delhi government has planned everything out before piloting its project.
