The YU brigade got further enhanced with the YUnicorn, a full metal body smartphone selling for about Rs 12,999 this month – their seventh product.
YUnicorn is their first phone to run stock Android software – called Android on Steroids (AOS) – moving away from the CyanogenMod version of Android.
At this price, you’ve got options like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 and the Moto G4 Plus, however, we couldn’t help but notice that the YUnicorn looks like the Meizu M3 Note.
The same curvy edges and placement of the camera sensor at the back, point to the similarity which has become a usual sight with YU these days. Moving beyond the company’s blatant design ethics, we’d like to highlight that YU says the YUnicorn can last for over 4 days. Which is great.
However, when you consider that the phone packs an octa-core processor (Helio P10 though) with 4GB RAM over a 5.5-inch Full-HD device, those claims are hard to believe. The brand has also failed to deliver a quality camera up until now, and their last product, YUtopia failed to impress us.
In general, it’s easy to find a phone with battery unit of more than 3000mAh. But most of these barely manage to stretch past the one-day mark, so if YUnicorn manages to last for four days, it will change ours and everyone’s impression of the brand.
Micromax CEO Rahul Sharma has tried various tricks to run the YU ship, which has fallen below his expectations – but they still have time on their side.
Will the YUnicorn become a hot-seller or just a phone that heats up? Will their experimental AOS work better than before? We’ll have to wait to see.
