Airtel Offers Free Unlimited Calls, Just Not For Everyone

The telecom operator is giving users more calling time, but at the cost of data.

Airtel is finally getting generous. Or, are they? The telecom operator is now offering free unlimited voice calls for its consumers. However, as always, Airtel’s offering comes with a big catch.

The unlimited call offer is only available to users who are on monthly plans of Rs 1199 onwards.

What’s the Point

With the Reliance Jio 4G expected to make inroads into the country and tap millions of users with its affordable voice and data plans, the move feels like an opportunity lost by Airtel.

Instead of applauding Airtel for providing free unlimited voice calls (without any talktime barrier), we are left to rue the scenario wherein you barely get any data benefit, especially for the money you end up paying.

As you can see above, the data usage is limited to 1GB for the Rs 1199 plan which honestly is a joke. When you consider that Jio 4G is expected to give you that much data for as low as Rs 80, it’s going to be hard for anyone to not make the switch.

Time for Two Numbers is Here

In all probability, Airtel’s unlimited call tactic will be followed by others in the market. This, at a time when more Indian consumers are absorbing content on their mobile, doesn’t really add up. Best case scenario for people could be to have two numbers; which lets you enjoy benefits of both the data and voice calling offers.
