Vivo has taken wraps off its latest V series flagship phone in the Indian market. The Vivo V9, as seen in the leaks recently, is their first to sport the iPhone X-like notch. It’s priced at Rs 22,990 and will be available from 2 April onwards via online sale.

At this price, the V9 will have to face-up against phones like the Honor 9i and a slew of mid-range phones.

Other than that notch on the front, the V9 also packs dual cameras (vertically placed) at the back. Having said that, Vivo’s obsession with high-end front cameras (for selfies, you know) sees it offer a 24-megapixel shooter on the front.

Talking about the build of the Vivo V9, it looks identical to its previous devices with its metallic-style plastic finish at the back. The phone comes in gold, blue and black variants for the Indian market.

But the biggest eye-catcher about the device is its 6.3-inch screen with the notch at the top. This according to Vivo allows the screen-to-body ratio to touch the 90 per cent mark. The screen packs a 2280x1080 pixels resolution, marked by the screen 19:9 ratio.

The V9 is equipped with a Snapdragon 626 processor, paired with 4GB RAM and offers 64GB storage which is further expandable. It’s interesting that for over Rs 20,000, Vivo is offering a mid-range chipset, whereas they could have packed it with the more powerful Snapdragon 660.

Somehow Vivo hasn’t warmed up to USB Type C ports yet, which explains why it’s sticking with micro USB 2.0 port on the V9, maybe?

It packs a 3,260 mAh battery and it’s good to see that the V9 comes with the Android 8.1 Oreo-based FunTouch OS skin, which looks identical to iOS in many ways. They’ve also added Face Access which lets you unlock the phone via facial recognition (hello, iphone X). Strangely, Vivo says facial recognition isn’t as secure as other forms of biometric ID.

When it comes to photography, the V9 manages with a pair of lenses - one 16-megapixel and one 5-megapixel with f/2.0 at the back of the phone. The latter sensor is able to work on depth effects and bokeh shots. On the front, there’s a 24-megapixel shooter, something that’s been the hallmark of Vivo phones in general.

Stay tuned for our first impressions of the Vivo V9.
