It has been in the news forever but there’s very little (visual evidence) to suggest that the product will be available to consumers anytime soon.
We’re talking about the foldable smartphone from Samsung, which the company has been touting for a long time now but without any tangible product to walk the talk.
But reports suggest that the unique device will be debuting by end of 2018. So, what is this Galaxy phone likely to offer and how much will it cost? Here’s everything we know about the upcoming Galaxy foldable phone from the South Korean giant.
It's the Galaxy X
Samsung’s CEO recently confirmed that the foldable device, called Galaxy X will make its debut at an upcoming developer conference slated for next month. The X (called ex for sure) series will be different from other devices for the brand, and likely to pitch for its innovative approach towards the future.
The Galaxy X might launch this year but don’t expect it to be available on shelves before 2019. Also, the most important thing, it will cost more than what most of you pay for the iPhone XS Max from Apple, which for buyers in India goes up to Rs 1.45 lakh this year.
Many expect the Galaxy X with its unique screen technology could be priced north of $2000 (Rs 1.48 lakh approx) in its main markets.
Dual-Screen Device
Many expect the Galaxy X to sport two screens instead of one big unit. The company had patented software interface to work on this laptop-like design in 2017, with the keyboard residing on the second screen.
Expect the Galaxy X’s screen to be sized at 7.3-inch, evenly divided into two parts. Not sure about how the device will be used and if Samsung will be able to offer the right form of interface for navigation.
Samsung's much awaited and talked-about foldable smartphone, according to reports is likely to offer the functionality of a tablet complete with multi-tasking and a big screen.
Power Underneath
Will a foldable phone get a uniquely-designed processor? This is unlikely for now, and we’re mostly expecting Samsung to go with its tried-and-tested Exynos processor. It is rumoured to be paired with 6 or 8GB RAM, that we’ve already seen on the Galaxy Note 9 this year.
There aren’t a lot of details available on the device as of now but from what we’ve heard till date, the Galaxy X could change the face of Samsung and its recognition among buyers.
But the most intriguing aspect about the Galaxy X will be its curved battery that Samsung has designed particularly for this product. It will carry a capacity between 3000mAh and 6000mAh.
Few More Things Worth Knowing
Samsung’s Galaxy X, the foldable phone has been a long-term project. The first prototype of the technology was showcased by the brand in 2011 but it has taken them almost 8 years to perfect its use-case, which finally allows them to market a product to the consumer.
We still don’t know what the final look and feel of the screen will be like, and whether the technology will permit Samsung to knock down the cost of the product. Stay tuned for more updates on the Galaxy X which will probably be making its way next month.
