It’s that time of the year - when the rumours of Apple hosting its media event to launch the new iPhones gather pace. The latest reports suggest that the new iPhones could be launched at an event in the United States on 12 September.
This event is reportedly going to see Apple launch the iPhone 9, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Plus,; if it happens, it will be the first time that all three devices are launched. A report by Inquirer states that iPhone 9 will be the most affordable smartphone by Apple in 2018; it also mentions that this might be the first time that we see an iPhone supporting a stylus aka Pencil in its case.
It's unclear whether these features, similar to those found on Samsung's newly-launched Galaxy Note 9, will be available on all three incoming iPhones or reserved for Apple's higher-end OLED models.
The OLED models will be more expensive than the "budget" 6.1-inch LCD iPhone 9, which Trendforce expects to have a starting price of around $699 to $749.
The iPhone X (2018) and iPhone X Plus will have starting prices of $899 to $949 and $999, respectively, according to the research firm.
The report confirms that the two OLED models are already assembled, while assembly of the budget LCD model will begin in mid-September, in line with the smartphones' rumoured September and October release dates, respectively. The new iPhones (yet to be named) will compete with Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the upcoming Pixel series from Google.
Last year's iPhones were unveiled on 15 September and went on sale in the following week on September 22. Apple has traditionally favoured Tuesdays to hold its event but the closest Tuesday, this year, to 15 September is the 11th of September - tragically remembered for the destruction of the twin towers of World Trade Centre in New York, 17 years ago.
In addition to the iPhones, we expect Apple to debut the Apple Watch Series 4 as well, which has been a global leader in the wearable space for the brand.
It’s quite likely that the new iPhones, that everyone is waiting for, will be launched on 12 September. Regardless, whenever it does happen, The Quint will give you live updates from the event with detailed analyses and our impressions of the products.
