If you thought Apple launching iPhone X with the notch last year will kickstart a mini revolution in years to come, you were spot on.

We’ve already seen brands like Vivo, Asus, Huawei and LG among others come out with notch-laden phones, and the list is only going to get longer with OnePlus, Samsung and Google waiting to join the ranks. Counterpoint reported that around 300 million smartphones with notches will be sold across the world in 2018.

The number quoted in the report translates into 19 percent of the total devices expected to be sold globally in 2018, it adds. Most of these devices will be running on Android and will be in the flagship segment.

Android smartphones will contribute to 55 percent of such devices and most of the tier-one Android Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) will embrace ‘notch displays’ in their flagships first

Most brands haven’t been able to justify the use of notch on their phones, except OnePlus, who’ve tried making it look worthy. Defending the use of notch, Carl Pei, CEO, OnePlus, said the decision was all about offering more screen real estate to users.

Although Google is looking to integrate the notch on Android P, Apple is sure to lead the chart, with over 45 percent of iPhones (existing and upcoming models) likely to sport the design.

Apple will lead the segment by capturing 45 percent of devices with “notch displays”.

But what about those who can’t afford to splurge on a high-end phone? Will they never get to experience the notch? For the sub-$200 (Rs 13,000 approx) phone segment to adopt the notch, consumer feedback will be crucial.

Even though Apple claims to have introduced the first phone with notch design, many believe that Andy Rubin (the man who co-founded Android) holds that accolade by launching the Essential phone.
