It’s an SUV, yet again, to swoop the World Car of the Year award as the Volvo XC60 has won the top prize, beating competition like the Range Rover Velar and the Mazda CX-5.

In 2017, it was another SUV, the Jaguar F-Pace, which won the coveted prize.

Among other awards that were presented at the event, the Range Rover Velar beat the Lexus LC 500 and the Volvo XC60 to win the World Car Design award.

Not only did the Volvo XC60 beat the above cars at the awards, but there was another Volvo that beat a train as The Quint raced the Volvo V90 Cross Country with the fastest train in India, the Gatimaan Express.

In terms of hybrids and clean fuel cars, it was the Nissan Leaf which trumped the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and the BMW 530e to walk away with the honours. With almost 2,80,000 units sold all over, the new-generation Nissan Leaf is one of the top selling electric vehicles in the world.

The Luxury segment also had a lot of buzz with competitors like the Audi A8, and the Porsche duo of the Cayenne and the Panamera competing for the top prize. The new generation Audi A8 emerged as the winner in this category.

As for the Urban World Car of the Year, it was the new generation Volkswagen Polo which got the better of cars like the Ford Fiesta, and the recently launched Suzuki Swift.

The BMX M5 was awarded the World Performance Car of the Year against competition like the Lexus LC 500 and the Honda Civic Type R.

The new BMW M5 is touted to be the most powerful BMW made till date, which can go from 0-100 kmph in just 3.4 seconds.
