Two years ago BMW’s i3 entered the market with one goal in mind, to change the game completely. After two years of its launch, the world of cars – once dominated by petrol and diesel guzzlers – now has a fair share of those that run on batteries, be it the Toyota Prius, Tesla Model S or the Porsche 918.

While electric cars were often seen as the future, with the BMW i3 the next generation of cars had finally arrived.

Some electric cars are designed to make everyday commute cheaper while being environment-friendly. Some others are designed as hybrids to push supercars to a new level.

The concept of mass-market electric cars got a huge boost when BMW came out with their i-models – BMW i3 and BMW i8.

The goal was to make these cars stand out not just in terms of style but also with the engineering that goes into the cars’ production. BMW’s success is evident in the sales numbers these cars have achieved.

According to BMW, one in every four electric car sold in Germany is a BMW i3; globally it’s one in 10. The i3 has been the best-selling model across the entire BMW range in the current year.

BMW produces over 100 units of the i3 every day at its Leipzig plant in order to meet the high demand.

The BMW eDrive technology which was originally developed for BMW i-cars will find its way into the BMW 3 Series, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW 7 Series model variants next year.

Even after two years, the i3 has so far only developed a sense of familiarity instead of feeling old and outdated.

It still has miles to go.
