Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles UK have announced a global partnership. This non-equity tie-up between Bajaj and Triumph will enable the former to build a range of mid-capacity motorcycles, building on the collective strengths of both companies.

Although more details on the partnership are awaited, the initial statement from Triumph states that this global partnership will enable Triumph to expand its global reach by entering new high-volume markets, especially in emerging markets across the world.

The statement also says that Bajaj, on the other hand, will gain access to the Triumph brand, which will enable it to offer a larger range of motorcycles within the domestic market and other markets.

What does that mean? Will Triumph and Bajaj develop new mid-capacity motorcycles? It's quite possible, because Bajaj does not have access to any motorcycle with a capacity of over 400cc, ever since its tie-up with Kawasaki ended in April 2017. Bajaj currently has an association with KTM, from which it has benefited technologically. Bajaj uses KTM-derived motors in a couple of its bikes like the Dominar and Pulsar 200.

Triumph, on the other hand, does not have a motorcycle that is below 675cc in capacity – the Triumph Street Triple and Triumph Daytona use this engine. Triumph will also benefit with the dealership reach that Bajaj has, which is more than 660 dealers.

This tie up between Bajaj and Triumph could possibly give rise to an all-new motorcycle model as well, which could help Bajaj compete with the likes of Royal Enfield in a price bracket of between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, which is a segment that Triumph is not present in.
