The interest in India as an electric-car market is rising, especially since Piyush Goyal, India’s Coal & Mines Minister, said India will have only electric vehicles on sale by 2030. This does sound like an ambitious plan.
However, that statement has been picked up and widely circulated, and as was obvious, it got the attention of one of the world’s biggest green-power champions – Elon Musk. Tesla founder and CEO, Elon Musk, tweeted a report from the World Economic Forum about India’s plans to go electric by 2030.
Musk had earlier announced plans for Tesla to enter India, but obviously getting the dates a bit mixed up, and later clarifying that it may take a while.

That leaves the electric car market in India wide open, with technically only ONE company selling electric cars in India – Mahindra. Yet, it doesn’t really sell large volumes of the Mahindra E20 Plus or Mahindra Verito Electric in the market. Of the 22,000 electric vehicles sold in India last year, only 2,000 were four-wheelers. So, it’s no wonder that Anand Mahindra, Executive Chairman Mahindra Group, is feeling a bit lonely.
Mahindra tweeted a reply to Musk urging him to get into the Indian market quickly!
“You don’t want to leave the whole market to Mahindra do you?” says Mahindra. Yes Elon, we concur. Give us more electric cars in India, soon!
