Upfront, this is a BMW that is pretty good value for money as far as the 5-Series BMWs go. This new seventh-generation BMW 5-Series, launched in India by cricketer and brand ambassador Sachin Tendulkar, is also made in India at the company’s plant in Chennai. It is available in four variants – three diesel and one petrol.
Here are the prices of the BMW 5-Series sedan, ex-showroom Delhi:
BMW 530i Sport Line: Rs 49,90,000
BMW 520d Sport Line: Rs 49,90,000
BMW 520d Luxury Line: Rs 53,60,000
BMW 530d M Sport: Rs 61,30,000
These prices include GST that will be applicable after 1 July (calculated at 43%).
Variants on Offer
There are three trim levels on offer – the Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport. The Sport Line has a high-gloss black finish to the centre console, leather wrapped steering and twin-tone alloy wheels.
The Luxury Line has a bit more chrome in its design, outlining the window line, the centre console, AC vents, buffed chrome alloys and ambient lighting. The M Sport package is built for the enthusiast at heart – offered on the sporty 530d variant. It comes with M badging, nappa leather upholstery, specially-contoured front seats, M-spec alloy wheels and air dams.
The car is available in four colours – white, black, blue and silver. In addition, there are specific blue and black variants available on the Luxury Line and M Sport variants.
New Features
BMW has taken some of the features that were present on the 7-Series and included that in the 5-Series too. The infotainment system, for instance, features gesture control – where you can make specific hand gestures to change channels or adjust the volume control and a host of other functions, without touching any buttons.
The party trick with this 5-Series is the remote-control parking feature, where the driver can ease the BMW into a tight spot, without even being in the car.
The BMW display key features a touchscreen that can be used as a remote to back the car into a parking spot or bring it out of a tight spot (in case a pesky car parks too close, preventing the doors from being opened). The car can be started, stopped and moved forward or backwards with the remote key.
It also features wireless charging for compatible mobile phones, parking assist with surround cameras and a heads-up display that projects relevant information on the windscreen – so the driver does not have to take his eyes off the road. In terms of safety, it also has an obstacle detection system in its surround view camera, projecting a 3D view of the traffic around the car and warning of any imminent danger.
The new 5-Series is about 70Kg lighter than its predecessor. It sports a muscular stance with a crouched-forward design. On the interiors, the traditional BMW elements are apparent. It has a driver-focussed centre console and ambient lighting all around. It comes with a 400-litre boot and a space saving spare wheel. Legroom has been increased at the rear. Rear seat passengers also get 10 inch displays to watch movies, HDMI connection, Blu-Ray player and the ability to connect gaming consoles.
Power and Performance
The most powerful engine among the lot is the one in the BMW 530d M Sport. This 3-litre, six-cylinder diesel puts out 265 bhp of power and 620 Nm of torque, with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. It can go from 0-100 in about 5.7 seconds. The 520d gets a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel that puts out 190 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. The 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine in the 530i puts out 252 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque, which can take it to 100 kmph in s 6.2 seconds.
All variants get six airbags, ABS, stability control, traction control, hill descent control and cornering brake control. BMW is offering a choice of service packages with the 5-Series ranging from a three-year, 40,000 km package to a 10-year, 2 lakh km package. It also comes with a warranty package up to six years.
