The 2017 Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has been launched in four variants, with prices starting at Rs 8.49 lakh for the base Sigma variant going up to Rs 11.29 lakh for the Alpha variant, ex-showroom Delhi.

The Quint was invited by Maruti Suzuki to lush-green Udaipur for a quick first drive of the all-new S-Cross. Here’s what’s new with the car.
The Design
The S-Cross gets a new design, with a completely redesigned front-end design. It has a bold chrome grille, with prominent vertical slats dominating the front end. The top-end Alpha variant we drove comes with LED projector headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. The bonnet too has been redesigned, making it more curvaceous and muscular.
In profile, not much has changed. It is still 4.3 metres long, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. It sports a new alloy wheel design, with slightly wider 215/60 tyres. At the rear, the only noticeable change is to the tail-lamp design – it now gets LED units.
The Engine
The S-Cross is available with only one engine unit now. It comes with the 1.3 litre multijet diesel engine putting out 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque in all the variants. This is mated to five-speed manual transmission with front-wheel drive only. It is equipped with a starter-generator mild-hybrid system, which Maruti calls a Smart Hybrid. This helps in better fuel efficiency (25.1 kmpl vs 23.65 kmpl earlier).
Features
The Alpha variant is loaded with quite a few features. It comes with a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play. It also features a reverse camera and in-built GPS navigation. Automatic climate control, push-button ignition, power-folding mirrors, keyless entry, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming mirror and all-black leather interiors are part of the kit on the top-end model.
Driving the S-Cross
The driving feel with the S-Cross is pretty familiar as it has the same engine that does duty in the Maruti Ciaz and Maruti Ertiga. It has adequate power for city driving, but out on the highway it tends to run out of breath. That shouldn’t matter much, as until about 120 kmph it is pretty responsive. Sound insulation is good and you don’t hear the engine much inside the cabin at normal speeds.
First Impressions
The steering is well weighted, offering a good feel of the road and the suspension is slightly on the stiffer side, but it soaks up bad roads pretty well. Overall, the all-new S-Cross is a decent, practical alternative to similarly priced sedans such as Maruti’s own Ciaz and the Honda City.
