Rohit Sharma became the first ever batsman to score five hundreds in a single edition of the World Cup as he breached the three-digit mark against Sri Lanka at Headingley on Saturday, 6 July.
The India vice-captain, who was tied with Kumar Sangakkara with four centuries, got past the former Sri Lanka captain against his own team by milking Kasun Rajitha for a four down the square leg boundary after playing three dot balls in the 29th over.
Sharma's third hundred in a row also tied him with Sachin Tendulkar for the record of six overall at World Cups (1 in 2015, 5 in 2019).
Sharma was out to Rajitha soon after for 103, and India lost its first wicket on 189 in the 31st over.
Earlier in this game, Rohit became only the second Indian after the Sachin Tendulkar to score over 600 runs in a single edition of the World Cup. He also became the highest run-getter in the group stages of a single World Cup.
Rohit went past Shakib Al Hasan's tally of 606 runs in eight innings when he reached 63. On Friday, Shakib broke Sachin Tendulkar's record made in the 2003 edition when the Master Blaster scored 586 runs in nine innings in the group stages.
Mathew Hayden had scored 580 runs in the group stages of the 2007 World Cup to be placed fourth in the list now.
Rohit has taken the World Cup by storm since Day 1, scoring 122 not out against South Africa in India's opening game. After that, Rohit had scores of 57, 140, 1, 18, 102 and 104 before the Sri Lanka match.
