England beat New Zealand in an extraordinary fashion to win the World Cup for the first time ever in the history of the game. With this win, they have now become the third team after India and Australia to win the World Cup on their home soil.

After the match ended in a tie, the Super Over also ended in a tie as well. However, England won the game, courtesy superior boundary count. England had more number of boundaries than New Zealand.

Batting first in the final, New Zealand scored 241, courtesy Henry Nicholls (55), Kane Williamson (30) and Tom Latham (47). Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett took six wickets together.

While chasing, England kept on losing wickets at regular interval. In the end a 110-run stand from Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler steadied the English innings. An unbeaten 84 from Stokes saw England reach 241 before they were all-out.

With both teams ending with 241, the match went into a Super Over. For England again Stokes and Buttler came out to bat, while Boult handled the ball for New Zealand. Here is a ball-by-ball account of the English Super Over

  • 0.1 Over: Boult to Stokes, 3 runs.
  • 0.2 Over: Boult to Buttler, 1 run
  • 0.3 Over: Boult to Stokes, 4 runs
