A proud India woke up on Independence Day to the news of Dipa Karmakar’s historic fourth place finish in the vault final event.

While Dipa Karmakar missed a bronze medal by a whisker to finish fourth in the women’s vault finals at the Rio Games, she was not the only who performed the Produnova at the final on Sunday night.

Forty-one-year-old Uzbekistan gymnast Oksana Chusovitina who made history by merely qualifying for her seventh Olympic Games in Rio also performed the ‘vault of death’, but could not match up to her Indian competitor.

The oldest athlete ever to compete in women’s gymnastics, she managed the two and a half somersaults but failed to land cleanly, resulting in deductions for execution of the risky move.

Escaping serious injury, Oksana instead ended her vault with a forward roll before getting up on her feet.

Oksana who first competed at the Olympic in 1992, five years before gold medallist of the vault final Simone Biles was even born, stood seventh with an average score of 14.833 while Dipa’s scored an average of 15.066.

The vault final at the Rio games ended with a seven time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina failing to perform the deathly vault routine as well as first time Olympian, India’s pride, Dipa Karmakar.
