1. Indian Hockey Team Beat Argentina 2-1

A gritty India beat Argentina 2-1 in a men’s hockey pool B match at Rio Olympics on Tuesday. Chinglensana (8th minute) and Kothajit Khadangbam (35th) were the scorers in white while Gonzalo Peillat (49th) reduced the margin for Argentina at the Olympic Hockey Stadium.

It is India’s second win in three Pool B matches, after beating Ireland 3-2 and getting beaten by Germany 1-2.

The win against Argentina is of great significance for India as they last defeated the Los Leones way back in 2009 Champions Challenge, where they won 3-2. In the recent past both the teams played a 3-3 draw at the six-nation tournament in Valencia ahead of the Games.

India will next play London Olympic silver medallist Netherlands in their penultimate pool match on Thursday.

2. Atanu Das Books Quarters Berth

Indian archer Atanu Das entered the men’s individual quarterfinals with a 139-135 win over Cuba’s Adrian Andres Puentes Perez.

In a thrilling best of five sets encounter that lived up to its billing, Das edged out his opponent 28-26, 29-26, 26-27, 27-28, 29-28 at the Sambodromo. Das will next face South Korea’s Seungyun Lee in the 1/8 Eliminators on Friday.

3. Rower Baban Fails in Quarters

Indian rower Dattu Baban Bhoknal was eliminated in the quarterfinal of the Men’s Single Sculls after finishing fourth. Baban finished with a time of 6:59.89 seconds –15 seconds behind the winner Damir Martin of Croatia.

The lone Indian at the sculls event was placed third for the first 500 meters of race but dropped to fourth spot later and failed to make the cut to quarterfinal.

4. Heena Sidhu’s Olympic Run Ends

Indian shooter and medal hope Heena Sidhu’s campaign at the Games ended with a 21st place finish in the qualifiers of the 25 metre Pistol Rapid Stage event.

Heena managed to score a total of 576 after the Precision and Rapid stages at the Olympic Shooting centre, which was nowhere close to earn a berth for the finals. Earlier this week, she was eliminated in the qualifying round of 10m Air Pistol event after finishing 14th.

5. Boxer Vikas Krishan Beats Conwell, Enters Pre-Quarters

The Asian Games gold medallist Vikas Krishan Yadav (75kg) gave a perfect start to India’s boxing campaign in the Olympics after beating the American greenhorn Charles Conwell to enter the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Vikas defeated the Olympic debutant 3-0 in his opening contest to make the last 16.
