England opener Jason Roy was wrongly given out by umpire Kumara Dharmasena on 85 in the second semi-final between England and Australia at Edgbaston in Birmingham, on Thursday, 11 July.

Chasing 224 to win, Roy and Jonny Bairstow (34) got the hosts off to a brilliant start. Roy was particularly attacking in his approach. He hit the Aussie bowlers to all parts of the ground as his brisk innings gave England the early momentum. Roy and Bairstow added 124 runs before Bairstow was dismissed in the 18th over by Starc.

Roy struck five sixes – three consecutively off Steve Smith's only over – and nine fours before being given out caught behind down the legside even though he didn't touch the ball.

Meanwhile, the replays showed a flat line between the ball and the bat and the umpiring error was for all to see on the giant screen. Moreover, England had already lost the review as Bairstow had used it up during his dismissal.

Roy was furious as he was returning back to the pavilion and even had a few words with the umpire on his way out.

Meanwhile, Twitter was angry with yet another umpiring error in this World Cup. This is how they reacted to it.

Despite Roy’s controversial dismissal, England successfully completed the chase and beat Australia by 8 wickets to book a berth in the World Cup final for the first time since 1992.
