A total of 89 athletes have gone to Austria to represent Bharat (India participates in the mega event under this name) at the Special Olympics Winter Games, which began on 19 March.

The Indians are participating in Alpine skiing, snow boarding, snow shoeing, figure skating, speed skating, floor hockey, floor ball (and unified floor ball), at the mega event.

Bharat has clinched 18 medals (6 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze) in the tournament so far. The tournament will go on till Friday and the closing ceremony will take place on Sunday.

India’s first gold medal in this competition was clinched by Megha from Himachal Pradesh. She clocked 1 minute and 3.11 seconds in Alpine skiing and won the event.

The athlete, with a hearing and speech disorder, was also the torch bearer at the Opening Ceremony, held on 18 March at the Planai Stadium in Schladming, Austria.
