Sania Mirza got Shah Rukh Khan to launch her autobiography Ace Against Odds on Wednesday in Hyderabad. Later, Rajdeep Sardesai put Mirza in a spot, but Mirza fielded off a certain unfortunate question admirably.
Sardesai interviewed the ace tennis star for India Today TV and asked a question that didn’t go down well with her. Rajdeep Sardesai wanted to know her plans about retirement , ‘settling down’ and motherhood.
Sania’s reaction:
A scandalised Sania asked Sardesai if he didn’t think she was settled.
You sound disappointed that I’m not actually choosing motherhood over being number one in the world at this point of time. But I’ll answer your question anyway, that’s the question I face all the time as a woman, that one of the questions women have to face – the first is marriage and then it’s motherhood. Unfortunately that’s when we’re settled, and no matter how many Wimbledons we win or number ones in the world we become, we’re not settled. But eventually, it will happen, not right now.Sania Mirza
Rajdeep, on his part, was apologetic, and admitted that he would never ask such a question to a male athlete. Mirza was happy with his apology and remarked that he was the first journalist to have apologized to her on national TV.
Only yesterday Jennifer Aniston lashed out at tabloids for their constant scrutiny of her body and their obsession with her imagined pregnancy. Now, one of India’s finest tennis players has been asked the same question. It casts a shadow on her success by implying that all her achievements set aside, motherhood ought to be her eventual Grand Slam.
