Wrestler Narsingh Yadav was "suspended" from the Maharashtra police force on Tuesday for allegedly campaigning for a Congress candidate.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Yadav, who holds the rank of assistant commissioner.

"Yadav has been placed under suspension," a spokesperson of Mumbai Police told PTI.

Yadav, posted in the Local Arms division of Mumbai Police, on Sunday allegedly participated in the campaign of Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam, who is contesting the Lok Sabha election from Mumbai-North West seat, a police official said.

The poll staff on duty sent a report to the state electoral office, following which the Amboli police on Monday registered an offence against Yadav under the Representation of the People Act, he said.

A government servant can not take part in campaigning under the law.

Yadav, a 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in men’s freestyle 74 category, will face departmental proceedings, the official said.

Varanasi-born Yadav had also won medals at the Asian Games and Asian Championships.

The Delhi High Court had earlier directed the CBI to respond to the alleged charge of doping against Yadav, which affected his career.
