Shane Watson scored a valiant 80 in the IPL final that Chennai Super Kings lost to the Mumbai Indians by 1 run on Sunday.
Unlike last year’s final, the Australian cricketer could not take the team home, having been run out in the last over as Mumbai restricted Chennai to 148/7, one run short of the target.
While many still celebrated the all-rounder’s effort, Harbhajan Singh has made a revelation that puts Watson’s innings in an altogether new context.
‘Can you guys see the blood on his knee... He got 6 stitches after the game... Got injured while diving but continued to bat without telling anyone,’ Harbhajan, Watson’s CSK team-mate, posted on his Instagram.
After Harbhajan’s post, CSK’s official Instagram page too posted about the 37-year-old’s dedication to the team’s mission.
Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Watson's belligerent 80, which featured eight fours and four sixes, left Chennai needing nine runs off Malinga's last over in the final.
However, in the final over, he attempted to retain the strike off the fourth delivery and got run out. Shardul Thakur replaced him at the crease and needed 2 runs off the last ball to win the match but was trapped leg before wicket off Malinga's last delivery handing Mumbai their fourth IPL title.
Earlier, Watson, who was dropped three times during his knock, and Dwayne Bravo brought the target down to 42 off the final four overs when they smashed 20 runs off Malinga's 16th over. This, after MS Dhoni got run out on 2 in the 13th over.
